Our main interest at the Chair of Solid State Physics is Suface Physics. Therefore most of the experiments, i.e. preparation and investigation of
surfaces, are carried out under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions.
Our machines contain methods for cleaning surfaces (sputtering & annealing) and for preparing thin films and nanostructures of metals, oxides and molecules.
We investigate atomic structure (Low-energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) &
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy(STM)), electronic structure (Two-photon Photoemission (2PPE) & Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS)),
and electron dynamics (2PPE).
Many details of the experimental setups are designed and built in-house. As an example you can see a sample manipulator designed to allow sample preparation in the temperature range from 50K to 1500K. The process of in-house design offers us great flexibility and our graduates profit from having acquired a great range of technical skills also.
