Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) from surfaces creates a diffraction pattern from which the size and shape of the surface unit mesh can be determined. Information on the location of individual atoms, however, is hidden in the intensities of the LEED spots. Carefully measured and analysed so called "LEED I(V)-spectra" reveal the atomic positions with an accuracy of a few picometer.
